Common Plumbing Problems in Older Molesey Homes, and How to Spot Them Early

Molesey has a good number of older properties, and older pipework and plumbing brings its own set of common issues. Spotting them early usually means a simpler, cheaper fix.

Old or mixed pipework

Many older homes have a mix of pipe materials from different decades of work, sometimes copper, sometimes older lead or galvanised steel sections still in place. Mixed materials can corrode faster where they meet, which is a common source of slow leaks that go unnoticed for a while.

Low water pressure

Older, narrower pipework, or a build-up of limescale inside the pipes over many years, is a common cause of disappointing water pressure in period homes. Worth having this looked at rather than assuming it's just how the house has always been.

Noisy pipes

Banging or knocking when a tap is turned off (sometimes called “water hammer”) is more common in older systems and is usually fixable, rather than something to live with indefinitely.

Ageing stopcocks and valves

A stopcock that hasn't been turned in years can seize up, which only becomes a problem in an emergency, exactly when you need it to work. Turning it gently once or twice a year keeps it usable.

Signs worth acting on quickly

  • Damp patches or discolouration on walls or ceilings, especially near where pipes run
  • A water bill that has crept up without an obvious reason
  • Taps or a boiler that have become noticeably noisier over time
  • Visible green or white staining around joints, a sign of a slow leak
