What Gas Safe Registration Actually Means, and Why It Matters
“Gas Safe registered” gets mentioned on every heating engineer's website, including this one, but it is worth explaining what it actually means and why it should matter to anyone hiring someone to work on gas appliances in their home.
It is a legal requirement, not a nice-to-have
Anyone working on gas appliances, boilers, cookers, fires, in a home in the UK is legally required to be Gas Safe registered. It replaced the old CORGI scheme in 2009, and it exists because gas work done badly can be genuinely dangerous, through leaks, fire risk or carbon monoxide poisoning.
What it means in practice
- Every registered engineer carries a Gas Safe ID card, which should always be shown, and can be checked.
- The card lists exactly which types of gas work that engineer is qualified for, boilers, cookers, fires and so on, since being registered for one does not automatically cover the others.
- Registered engineers are required to keep their qualifications current through regular assessment, not a one-off test years ago.
How to check before you book
Ask to see the card, or check the engineer or company on the Gas Safe Register website directly. It takes a couple of minutes and it is a completely reasonable thing to ask, any legitimate engineer will expect it.
CallGas is fully Gas Safe registered and insured, and engineers always carry their registration card and are happy to show it on request. Covering Walton-on-Thames, West Molesey and the surrounding area. Call 07973 793306.
