What to Do in a Gas Emergency, Before the Engineer Arrives
If you smell gas or suspect a leak, the priority is always safety first, call for help first, and figure out the cause afterwards. This is general safety guidance; CallGas is a heating and plumbing company, not the emergency gas line, so the most important number below is not ours.
If you smell gas
- Call the National Gas Emergency Service immediately on 0800 111 999. This line is free and available 24 hours a day.
- Turn off the gas supply at the meter if it is safe and easy to reach.
- Open doors and windows to ventilate the property.
- Do not turn electrical switches on or off, and do not smoke or use naked flames.
- Leave the property if the smell is strong, and wait outside for the emergency service.
Signs of a possible carbon monoxide problem
Carbon monoxide has no smell, which is what makes it dangerous. Headaches, dizziness, nausea or unusual tiredness, especially if several people in the house are affected at once, or if it improves when you leave the house, are warning signs. A working carbon monoxide alarm is one of the cheapest and most effective pieces of safety equipment a home can have.
After the emergency is dealt with
Once the National Gas Emergency Service has made things safe, a Gas Safe registered engineer can identify and fix the underlying fault, whether that is a boiler, a pipe, or an appliance. This is where CallGas can help.
For anything that is not an immediate emergency, gas repairs, servicing or general plumbing and heating work, CallGas covers Walton-on-Thames, West Molesey and the surrounding area. Call 07973 793306.
